Oh no! They asked Americans about "others in their country" and then generalized the answer to be what Americans think about Americans.

You'd have to have your head up your ** about American feelings about immigrants and asylum-seekers, let alone American illegal immigrants, to generalize the answer about "Americans" or US citizens.

Part of it is that Democrats think Republicans are bad and that Republicans think Democrats are bad. Note this quote:

Democrats and independents who lean toward the Democratic Party are much more likely
than Republicans and Republican leaners to rate fellow Americans as morally
and ethically bad (60% vs. 46%).

I've been chewing on this a lot:

and thinking how "increasing social cohesion" seems entirely out of reach in the US although the fact is that we can't afford to go on the way we are going. It's particularly funny to me that people in Canada, next door, economically almost part of the United States (don't tell the President!) is the country with the lowest level of people saying their countrymen were bad.

That's a remarkable statistic. Because from my Democratic perception, Republicans are more likely to say, out loud, that Democrats are morally bad.

I wonder if it's a difference in the way they interpret the question, which is about "Americans" rather than the other party. One thought: when Democrats say they think Americans are morally bad, they mean Republicans. And when Republicans say that Americans are not morally bad, they also mean Republicans. Perhaps because Democrats are, as they have often said, "not real Americans".

That's pure speculation, of course. I'm just having trouble squaring this rosy statistic with the constant stream of Republican messaging about "woke", "PC", "open borders", and other synonyms for "bad".

Perhaps it's one of those things like I've heard about Iran, where when they say "death to America" is doesn't actually mean "death to America".

Am I reading the correct article? The one I just read does not include the work "immigrant" nor the word "asylum" at all?

Funny, I certainly think Americans have bad morals and ethics, and your comment is an example of why.
