This is used to great effect with the Alchemy software synthesizer's "Detail" knob, allowing you to edit sounds with surgical precision or to make broad strokes. Hand-editing additive sounds is almost impossible without it.

Alchemy in general is a jaw dropping piece of kit. It would give the UX types here a seizure though...
