I think it's meant to make fun of the fact that Google raised prices on their models and people were upset, and this is Google's way of lowering back the price because by Jan 1st 2027, this model isn't going to be used since people will move on to the latest models.
Personally, I feel like Google blundered on their pricing because while I was using the free version of the Gemini harness, they took away most of the free limits and made people move over to their Anti-Gravity harness for no apparent reason. I was about to splurge for a Pro sub since I already used Google for extra storage but putting up limits like they did made me not want to trust they wouldn't do more price shenanigans. Now their models are behind and it seems like they're scrambling.
Wasn't there some an article/video from somewhere where a man had worked in a hot environment (I think it was on a navy ship in the engine room) and even though his family had a history of Alzheimer's, he never showed any signs of it. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? (Might not be Alzheimer, might be thinking of another disease)

I built my own script to get a seat near the middle and towards the back at the Metreon but so far I have not seen many available. My guess is checking 15 minutes is too slow. And also I've been getting rate-limited by Cloudflare. Not sure if I want to pour more resources into getting around it.
The Metreon is running IMAX 70MM showings for 24 hours straight today started at 3AM, [half hour for previews, 3 hour movie, half hour cleanup], then 7AM, 11AM, 3PM, 7PM, 11PM and one on Sunday at 3AM and all showings are basically full. It is crazy.
+1 to the AMC Metreon being one of the toughest. Of all the theaters I'm monitoring, it's probably in the top 3 of fewest seats opening up. My best guess is that SF is just a market where demand far exceeds supply.
But I am seeing a few every day, and I'm guessing it will get better after opening weekend too. My system checks every 10 mins leading up to 24 hours before showing, then ramps up to every 60 seconds.

I have an M4 Max and when I was trying out local LLM work with pi it has probably felt like the hottest I've ever felt any kind of Macbook be. I could feel the radiated heat off it even a few inches away. Honestly felt hotter than any Intel Macbook I've used. Because of that I stopped as I didn't want to harm my laptop in case I need to hold it for 10 years due to all the supply issues/price increases.
It is just easy pickings to blame npm specifically. Yes, while they do share some part of the blame, no package manager is immune from attack and certainly not ones where the attackers exploited being able to extract out secrets from a developer's environment variables or files. Seems more like developers should be managing their secrets better?
I also find that using the meme that this title snowclones is in bad taste too.
Security doesn't exist in absolute. It's about relative effort. Exploiting Debian's package management requires quite a bit of effort, NPM, while being funded by Microsoft, only need to have a token stolen. And postinstall scripts were decried as a security risk for a long time
An Earthquake happened in SF recently where I got a push notification from Apple/iOS and I felt it maybe 5-10 seconds later. Nothing fancy though just a notification. I'm guessing it's not on for Japan? Seems like this app shows way more.
For big enough quakes you get notification from the government (a VERY loud and specific one too, being in public and hearing _everyones_ phones suddenly go off is... mildly terrifying) too; but they're so frequent and (usually) non-super-threatening that they don't get sent out for _every_ quake.
All phones with 4G/5G worldwide should have it. They managed to make the broadcast push SMS thing used for the alerts a mandatory requirement for phones.
The broadcast warning from Japanese equivalent of NOAA don't get issued to areas where the peak acceleration is expected to be less than Shindo 4 level. So GP probably had 3 or less.
Shindo is peak and Magnitude is an integral, so these two can be wildly apart, and Shindo is more commonly used in Japan since buildings tend to be more resistant to longer events with lower peak intensity.
"not on for japan?" Are you expecting to have gotten a notification in SF for an earthquake in a place a 12 hour flight away? That sounds like annoyance, not a feature.
We also have the MyShake app here in CA, but I don't recall getting a notification through it for the last quake. I was asleep, though, so my memory is hazy.
you can actually customize how strong a quake you're notified for. but ymmv. the recent california quake was actually the first time that app even notified me.
But it sounds like Japan's system also sends push notifications which is why I was unclear about what you felt was different/missing. I think the specific tone sound we get from EAS is distinct.
