Funny, one of the best things one can do to get faster with Vim is to switch CapsLock and Escape (though I know people who are still reaching all the way to that top left corner even after years of using it).

I've been waiting a long time for the successor to the N900. It's sad it'll never happen, and that there's nothing similar on the horizon (especially with Maemo/Moblin/MeeGo floundering).

I've long believed the master-apprentice system to be the most effective type of teaching system. Unfortunately, it doesn't scale.

You just need more masters. It works fairly well in Germany.

It scales, but only in a massively parallel way.

MathOverflow is a hosted instance of the SE stack, while the "Mathematics Stack Exchange" is part of the Stack Exchange network (started in their Area 51, "graduated", etc). The former is mainly for academics and professionals in the field, while the latter is more elementary and geared more towards the average user.

Question: why is everything greyed out on the site except for a Facebook "recommend" button?

Because I suck at designing.

The complexity is actually one of the reason's I'm less attracted to American football than, say, soccer. In my experience programmers like simplicity and elegance, of which the NFL, with its large collection of seemingly arbitrary rules, has neither.

That's not to say I don't enjoy watching it (especially being a Wisconsinite...).

A wise man once said "Don't try to be a great man; just be a man, and let history make its own judgments."

The reason _why (used as an example in the article) has the cult-like following he does is that he made fun, interesting things, not because he marketed himself or gamed the social system around him. Sure, a bit of self-promotion is often a good thing, but if you're expending lots of energy on making yourself into an icon, you've got less use actually earning such a status.
