Isn't this just using SMTP through whatever mail server you have connected to Gmail?

Either way, this is likely going to stop me from using Gmail as my mail aggregator, I've used this feature for nearly a decade to send and receive from 6 different addresses, Gmail recognizes the to address and automatically sets the from address to the correct account.

Is Thunderbird still decent nowadays? What's a decent mobile + desktop replacement?

No, Gmail directly sends the email from their own SMTP servers (you have to set up SPF to allow them etc)

I've had this happen to me personally on vacation - we were locked out of our rental car, asked a person at the nearby place to call a locksmith to get me back in, and they didn't quote price over the phone. When they got there, they popped the lock and then wanted $200, cash only so you couldn't chargeback, which I learned after the fact is completely outrageous for that service. They had a lot of fake Google reviews that were glowing, overshadowed by the real ones calling out the scam.

I've heard worse happening in other cases where they drill locks and then quote much higher than $200 after they do it, it's sadly common.

$200 for an emergency specialty service is shockingly...fair?

That's exactly what I would think if I were in trouble and hadn't done any research, but in fact it is not. When I needed a locksmith a few years ago, at night, it cost $70.

Probably depends highly on location, company and type of lock. I needed to get into my mailbox after losing the keys. They wanted 150 for literally 5 minutes with a screwdriver (lesson learned!). Of course I'm paying for those years of experience as well as the drive over. I was able to talk them down to 120. Oh and it was during the weekday! I also did research prior and called a few places, they all basically said the same thing: "depends on the lock but probably minimum 100".

The person charging you more than you think is reasonable in hindsight doesn’t make it a scam? It also doesn’t mean you can do a chargeback?

The DOE does a lot of "energy consuming" or less than environmentally friendly work, to include, historically, nuclear tests, and also has had ownership of some of the largest TOP500 supercomputers over the years.

Large compute projects such as an open language model aren't too far from their usual. You could easily argue the race to AGI is the closest thing to a modern Manhattan Project we've had in some time.

Whether that's a good allocation of resources is debatable, but from a national strategic perspective this makes sense, since private industry has pulled out of government contracts before in the LLM space (see Anthropic), this is just hedging their bets.

Ugh. Was really hoping that they were going to actually announce a release date for the display glasses this year at I/O, but it seems that they still don't have the tech ready for this. Audio only this year is a massive disappointment.

> Audio only this year is a massive disappointment.

Maybe for you. There's been a lot of pushback against glasses and video recording.

The video recording/cameras I don't necessarily care about nor frankly want, what I want is a nice set of glasses with a HUD untethered from a bulky puck or battery pack. That's a device I've wanted to hack on for a long time - Google Glass was actually something I was interested in sans camera, I think there's still great potential for HUD style devices without the privacy implications of world facing cameras.

Was hoping that Google would be able to get the technology there this year for consumers, especially since Meta announced and demoed similar. Seems like Meta is going to be the only game in town for this for the foreseeable future, but I don't trust Meta in the slightest with a device like this from a privacy standpoint nor a platform openness standpoint.

It's just the digits of pi, likely not their real SSN.

Very cool! I did a similar project with an accompanying app that connected to one of these inexpensive printers over Bluetooth in order to play a Discord, Lord of Disharmony commander deck in person.

The portability of the whole setup makes it easy to bring to an LGS, it's always a treat to see people's reactions when I pull out the printer and they see how the deck works!

It's likely RAG / augmented with web data. Would be interested if local execution returned the same results.

It is. You can see a little "G" icon indicating that it searched the web with Google.

Interesting, mine has a different icon and used Bing

It certainly doesn't, I'm running the 7B locally with ollama

It provided a lot more detail about the case, but does not have current information. It hallucinated the question about juror count, or maybe confused it with a different case seems more likely, one of the E Jean Carroll cases or the SDNY Trump Org financial fraud case?

You: how many jurists have been selected in the Trump trial in New York?

Meta AI: A full jury of 12 people has been selected for former President Donald Trump's trial in New York City, in addition to one alternate ¹. The selection process will continue in order to select five more alternates, though it is hoped that the selection process will be finished tomorrow ². Once all alternates have been selected, opening statements can begin ¹.

Yup, the Meta hosted system is much more than LLaMA 3. Seems to have RAG, search, and/or tool usage

Would love to experiment with this for work, but the following clause in the license (notably absent in the Llama 2 license) would make this really hard:

> i. If you distribute or make available the Llama Materials (or any derivative works thereof), or a product or service that uses any of them, including another AI model, you shall (A) provide a copy of this Agreement with any such Llama Materials; and (B) prominently display “Built with Meta Llama 3” on a related website, user interface, blogpost, about page, or product documentation. If you use the Llama Materials to create, train, fine tune, or otherwise improve an AI model, which is distributed or made available, you shall also include “Llama 3” at the beginning of any such AI model name.

Really impressive HumanEval results for the 8B model though, would love to plug this into Continue for tab completion since the current benchmark numbers for Llama 3 8B blow every other 8B model out of the water

This is the mildest possible clause they could have included short of making the whole thing public domain. Heck the MIT license has similar requirements ("The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all copies or substantial portions of the Software.")

deepseek-coder-instruct 6.7B still looks like is better than llama 3 8B on HumanEval [0], and deepseek-coder-instruct 33B still within reach to run on 32 GB Macbook M2 Max - Lamma 3 70B on the other hand will be hard to run locally unless you really have 128GB ram or more. But we will see in the following days how it performs in real life.

With quantized models you can run 70B models on 64GB RAM comfortably.

Probably pouet.net . I'm still amazed by so many of the 64k demos on there... incredible what you can do with that little space.
